This is Kimberly Cheatle, the Secret Service Director. When I saw her picture I did a double-take. She doesn't look the part. She has a common phenotype, one I see a lot doing IT for small businesses. She looks like a lady named Brenda, who does the books and answers the phone for the local pneumatic supply shop; this same Brenda frequently struggles to print PDFs and once accidentally deleted the Quickbooks file. We need Brenda, we love Brenda, but I'm not sure we need her running the Secret Service.
The equal-opportunity fates have been kind to Cheatle. She makes $280k per year,1 with a rock-solid pension paying roughly $60k per year after she retires.2 Most Brenda's make $45k a year and will probably never be able to retire. I think in her heart of hearts Cheatle knows she’s not $280k caliber.
We all now know the Secret Service response to the assassination was completely FUBAR.3 I was surprised to learn the Secret Service has a strict, "Don't shoot first" policy, which is exactly the kind of policy the Federal agency tasked with shooting assassins before they shoot important persons would have. Would-be assassin Matthew Crooks was seen taking range-findings before the event. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the Secret Service watched as he spray-painted yardage markings on the grass and yellow-taped holdover lines on Trump's podium. After suiting up and getting prepped in plain sight he climbed up the side of a nearby metal building. This building had pros and cons for Crooks. The Pros - It had a good overview of his target and a gently sloped roof. The con - It was the temporary HQ for local law enforcement. It was filled to the hips with Dicks, who probably saw Crook’s legs hanging outside the window as he hoisted himself up.
While he was doing this people in the crowd, many of them in various stages of inebriation, were pointing out his activities and trying to scuff out the range markings, but to no avail. The Secret Service, being the cool-headed professionals they are, were completely unperturbed by a woman directly below them, probably Brenda again, waving her arms, pointing, and shouting whatever nonsense plebes shout about.
Meanwhile inside the building, local law enforcement saw the legs, heard some guy walking around on the roof, heard Brenda outside, and in a sudden flash of insight, decided to call for backup. Then Sheriff Slupe showed up. He found the least obese deputy and detailed him for roof-hoofing duty. This deputy, standing on Sheriff Slupe's shoulders ("Hurry UP, goddamn it, I can't hold you all day") poked his head over the lip of the roof. He saw Crook's sniper nest. Crooks pointed his gun at the officer. The officer, along with Sheriff Slupe, and I’m not sure if he was still on his shoulders or not, decided the #1 person to Protect and Serve was himself, and retreated to safety.
And the rest is history. Lady Fortuna turned Trump's head. Counter-snipers took out Crooks, but not before he’d emptied half his mag. After all, the Secret Service has a strict "Count 5-Mississippi Rule" before returning fire.
Speaking of fired, Cheatle won’t be. At most, she'll be moved to a different Federal position where her incompetence can go unnoticed, such as “Federal Forests Administrator of Kansas”. As the Federal Forest Admin of Kansas (There's also a State bureaucrat who does the same job; in fact, half the job is fighting over who gets to take care of both the trees in the Kansas forest), her incompetence will only harm her own staff; knowing the Feds, it's probably a staff of twenty three, seventeen of whom are in some kind of management position. Most of her billion-dollar annual budget will be wasted (These trees don't grow on trees, you know), but, by God, this is America and anything the rest of the world has, like ships, cults, bureaucracies, or sinecures, we've got them bigger.
Apparently the CIA/FBI grooming programs are also suffering from the competence crisis. I'm sure they were frustrated to see their boy struggling to even scale the roof (That slope!). Crooks spent all the money they gave him on Magic the Gathering cards, so all he had for the job was his Dad's old DPMS AR-15. I gotta tell ya', if I was trying to knock off the President I'd splurge a little on the rifle. DPMS rifles are a fine starter gun, but let's be real, there's airsoft guns at Wal-Mart with tighter tolerances. At least have some nice kit so you can die with dignity. Crooks didn't aim at center mass but instead went for the "St. Peter's Potshot" and aimed for the ear, an inexplicable action that drew many a "Oh ffs" from the CIA goons watching events via Predator drone.
Formerly, the CIA/FBI knew that the guy blamed for the action (Oswald) rarely was of the talent needed to complete the action (Guy on the grassy knoll). They've been combining the role lately and I'm not sure why. Not to save money, certainly. Maybe time? Or, more likely, because a secret known by three is known by all?
Honestly I feel bad for the kid. He should have joined the chess club in High School, spent college arguing the intricacies of Star Trek or D&D with his fellow nerds in his nerdery, then gotten a job as a technician in a lab. His wife wouldn't have been hot, probably a four, with makeup, but they'd have been happy enough watching re-runs of Babylon Five together. In a sane America he would have been fine. But America isn't sane, by design, so he's dead. More importantly, so is Cody Comperatore, a bystander in the crowd. He was a good man who won't get to see his grandchildren now.4 Nice job, Feds.
As many others have said, we don't really need to distinguish between malice or incompetence anymore. If our people are dying in the stands, it doesn't really matter why. Whether we die from their direct intent or from indifference doesn't make a difference.
So what’s the whitepill, you ask?
Whatever competency crisis has hit the private sector, where failures at least sometimes still lead to pain, we can be sure that same crisis has also hit the bureaucracies, and it's even worse. It's worse because they've leaned into DEI longer and more aggressively than the corps. And because when the door falls off a Federal jet, budgets go up. See the F-35.
The fallout from technocratic stupidity and the resultant suffering is not shared in any way by the bureaucrats. All failures are without consequence sufficient to prevent the repetition of the failure. They’ve closed the feedback loop for generations now. That’s made them soft. Reckless. Feckless. Fools.
If your intent is to fix the system, this is a cause for alarm. If your intent is to get rid of the system, it’s a great big ole’ whitepill. We in the Dissident Right intend to seize control from those currently in power. Those currently in power seem to consistently be idiots. The moldering edifice of Federal power just needs a little shove, and it's gone.
Please note - It needs a shove. I see many on the Right who would like to patiently wait until the edifice crumbles of its own accord. But it could fall on our heads. It could also take quite awhile. We should remember that Cheatle very much likes her $280k per year and immunity to consequences, and she will never, never give that up. We'll have to take it.
So swallow that whitepill and get to work. We need two things: Courage and Organization. Courage to make the shove, and organization to make the shove stronger. It doesn't have to come to violence. The Left wants violence because they lack the creativity or grace to think of other options. We don’t have that problem. Non-violent force is sufficient to finish the Feds.
I don’t like to leave things with a general “Do better”, so here’s a few great organizations I’ve found recently. All of them, in one way or another, are about strengthening or executing non-violent force. This will probably turn into a regular list. I don’t want any of my readers to ever feel powerless.
